Press Release: Final fields set for 2018 Sir Walter Miler

August 1, 2018 – Raleigh, NC – Sir Walter Running is excited to announce the final Elite fields for the 2018 Sir Walter Miler. The field consists of multiple Olympians, World Championship Medalists, National Champions, and former local collegians. The event returns in its fifth year to its standard first Friday night spot on August 3, 2018 at the Meredith College Track. The 2018 event will again feature Elite Men’s and Women’s Mile races, as well as two events that show off the local running clubs: the Summer of Miles Run Club Miler, and two heats the Sir Walter Running 4×400 meter relay.The Sir Walter Miler is free and open to the public, and will again be broadcast live internationally on FloTrack.org

The Pre and Postrun race party will be hosted within walking distance of the track at Raleigh Brewing Company, starting at 6pm. Wicked Weed Brewing (Run for El Dorado Pale Ale), Hopfly Brewing Co. (Beach Beach), and Raleigh Brewing (Sir Sandman Kolsch) have brewed exclusive, runner-friendly beers to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer FundBo’s KitchenArepa Culture, and the Webby’s Shaved Ice food trucks will be in the Raleigh Brewing parking lot as well.

The 2018 Sir Walter Miler will include the deepest prize money to date with $5000 in guaranteed money plus $15,000 in bonus incentives, that includes the JDL Fast Track State Record Bonus ($1000), Gold (Sub 3:54 Male / 4:26 Female), Silver (Sub 3:57 / 4:28), Bronze (Sub 4:00 / 4:30), and First Timer Bonuses for those athletes breaking the 4:00 / 4:30 barrier for the first time. The Sir Walter Miler has had 26 sub 4:00 performances and 9 sub 4:30 performances since its inception in 2014. The last time the 4:00 barrier was broken in Raleigh before then was 1974. No Woman had ever broken 4:30 in North Carolina before 2015.

The Sir Walter Miler weekend will also feature the “Adopt a Runner” event on Thursday afternoon at Meredith, which pairs local high school teams with participating Elite Athletes for a Question and Answer Session. On Thursday night, Runologie will host a ticketed Run with the Pros Dinner. Runologie also partnered with Sir Walter Running in developing special editions goodr sunglasses to commemorate five years of the Sir Walter Miler. On Saturday Morning, the “Rise and Run with the Pros” at Umstead Park will allow anyone to run a few miles with the Elite Athletes featured in the Sir Walter Miler. The event is free and Rise Cameron Village will be providing complimentary Coffee, Biscuits, and Donuts, and ElliptiGO will be offering demo rides. Rounding out the weekend is the “Sir Walter Extra Miler” Saturday afternoon at Tasty Beverage Co. This event will feature the “Run for El Dorado” Pale Ale, as well as other Wicked Weed offerings, and $1 per pint sold will go towards the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
