Fun Facts
- The event is held on the First Friday of August every year, which syncs up with the first week of official practice for North Carolina High School Cross Country runners.
- Created to help local standout Sandy Roberts attack the hallowed Sub 4:00 Mile in 2013, as the Sandman Mile, the event went viral online, leading to the creation of the Sir Walter Miler.
- Since 2014, the Sir Walter Miler has grown to become the biggest and best “grassroots mile event” in the country, hosting thousands of fans each year. The event is unique where there are very few races and fans are allowed to stand right inside lane 1 and right outside lane 4, to truly get up and personal with the athletes.
- The event was called the “Future Model of American Track & Field” Sports Illustrated
- When the event was created, the last sub 4:00 mile in Raleigh was run in 1974. Since 2014, Sir Walter Miler has had 69 sub 4:00 performances on the Men’s side..
- Before Sir Walter Miler, no Woman had ever run under 4:30 in the Mile in Raleigh, or the state of North Carolina. Since then, we have seen 28 Women break the hallowed barrier.
- In 2016, Paralympic Gold Medalist Mikey Brannigan became the first (and only to this day) T20 athlete to break the 4:00 barrier, running 3:57.58
- One local Male and Female athlete will have the opportunity to compete in the Elite Mile Races as the winner of Sir Walter Running’s June “Pop Up Mile” series.
- The night of races includes the local Run Club 4×400 relay, as well as the Coaches Clash, where local high school coaches square off over a mile.
- Events surrounding “The Miler” include an Athlete Panel on Wednesday, and Athlete Dinner on Thursday, a Pre and Post Party at Raleigh Brewing Company the night of the race, a “Run with the Pros” at the WakeMed Cross Country course on Saturday, where fans can run with the athletes, and the weekend ends with the “Raleigh RunDown Downhill Mile,” a super-fast road mile down Centennial Parkway that is open to anyone.
