Press Release: Final fields set for 2025 Sir Walter Miler
Final fields set for 2025 Sir Walter Miler
August 5, 2025 – Raleigh, North Carolina – Sir Walter Running is excited to announce the final elite fields for the 2025 Sir Walter Miler. The event returns in its twelfth year this Friday, August 8, 2025 at Meredith College. The event is free and open to the public and will be broadcast live on RunnerSpace.com.
The event kicks off at 6pm with a carnival by the Meredith College track, with a vendor village, giveaways, games, food trucks and more. Raleigh Brewing Company will host the post race party at 10pm.
In 2025, the Sir Walter Miler is proud to be on the 2025 World Athletics Continental Tour for the first time at the Silver level.
“Founded in 2014 by three passionate runners and Triangle residents, the Miler unofficially began the year prior with a simple goal: to help former North Carolina State University track star Sandy Roberts, one of the event’s co-founders, break a 4-minute mile. It was a feat that hadn’t been achieved in Raleigh for 40 years. Roberts teamed up with his brother and coach, Logan, to put on a one-person race at Cardinal Gibbons High School, and they collaborated with their friend Pat Price, a fellow runner, to gather a crowd of spectators,” said Rachel Simon in a recent article for “The Walter.”
The 2025 event will again feature Elite Men’s and Women’s Mile races, as well as two events that show off local runners: the Run Club Mile and the local Run Club 4×400 meter Relay.
The Men’s Elite Field is highlighted by two 3:47 milers; Spanish Olympian Mario Garcia Romo and Australian Olympian Olli Hoare, both of whom represent On Athletics Club, based out of Boulder, CO.
The Women’s Elite Field is led by two 4:22 milers; Canadian Olympian Simone Plourde and American Olympian Colleen Quigley.
An Elite Athlete Panel will be held Wednesday, August 6th at 6pm at Hartwell, where many of the athletes will field questions from hosts Pat Price and Lindsey Hein (of the “I’ll Have Another” podcast). Sir Walter Running will be holding a pop up shop at Hartwell all day. The event is free and open to the public.
Up-to-the-minute Race Day information can be found at sirwaltermiler.com/2025-info and on the Summer of Miles podcast, which is posting daily episodes leading up to the event.
The 2025 Sir Walter Miler week will consist of events from Monday through Saturday. Saturday morning brings the adidas Run with the Pros. On Saturday night, the Raleigh RunDown Downhill Mile will be held on Centennial Parkway. The race will be followed by awards and a post-race party at Trophy Brewing on Maywood to finish the weekend.

Some history on the Sir Walter Miler
- When the event was created, the last sub 4:00 mile seen in Raleigh was run in 1974. Since 2014, the Sir Walter Miler has hosted 86 sub 4:00 performances on the Men’s side..
- Before the Sir Walter Miler, no Woman had ever run under 4:30 in the Mile in Raleigh, or the state of North Carolina. Since then, we have seen 40 Women break the hallowed barrier at the event.
- In 2015, Sports Illustrated called the event the “Future Model of American Track & Field”
- In 2016, Paralympic Gold Medalist Mikey Brannigan became the first (and only to this day) T20 athlete to break the 4:00 barrier, running 3:57.58.
- In 2018, all 13 American finishers in the Men’s Elite Mile broke 4:00, which tied for the most in a single race.
- In 2021, 9 Women broke the 4:30 barrier, including 8 Americans, the highest number in a single race (to this day).
- In 2024, Dorcus Ewoi led Sage Hurta-Klecker and Heather MacLean to the top three outdoor mile times in the World for the 2024 Outdoor Season.
- The Women’s Record is 4:19.71 (Dorcus Ewoi ’24) and the Men’s Record is 3:51.89 (Waleed Suliman ’24).
