Press Release: Appleton, Kessler Victorious in Sprint Finishes at 2026 Sir Walter Miler
August 7, 2026 – Raleigh, North Carolina – The 2026 Sir Walter Miler saw a pair of sprint finishes as Margot Appleton and Hobbs Kessler raced to victory with winning times of 4:23.45 and 3:51.86, respectively, on Friday night at Meredith College. For the first time ever, the 13th running of the event saw not one but two national records fall.
In the Women’s Elite Race, it looked like it would be a two-woman contest as Sinclaire Johnson and Heather MacLean went with pacer Hannah Ballowe in the early going, gapping the chase pack and flirting with the pace lights set at meet record tempo. A thousand meters in, the race became a tossup as the field closed the gap and set up an epic finish. With most of the 13-woman field in striking distance, the lead changed hands several times in the final lap before Appleton charged to the front down the final straightaway for the victory, narrowly besting Kayley DeLay and Lindsey Butler who finished with times of 4:23.77—a PR of over seven seconds—and 4:24.18, leading 11 competitors under the vaunted 4:30 barrier, an event record.
Appleton now owns the distinct honor of being the 50th woman in the history of the event to dip under 4:30. Previous to the Sir Walter Miler, no woman had ever broken the barrier in the state of North Carolina. Among those 11 women under 4:30, 10 were Americans, besting the all-time record of nine American women under 4:30 in a single race (Sir Walter Miler, 2025). The one non-American in that group was a notable one as Carmen Alder broke her sister’s Ecuadorian National Record with a time of 4:26.13, taking over 10 seconds off of the previous mark.
The Men’s Elite Race played out strikingly similar to the women’s. It was Luke Houser who took the charge, chasing the pacer largely alone in front of the large chase pack. But for Houser’s efforts, the race might not have turned out to be as fast as it was with Kessler’s eventual mark being the second-fastest winning time in event history behind only Ky Robinson’s 3:50.90 (2025). Like the women’s event, the men’s race came down to a jumbled field and a sprint finish when Kessler showed his chops as an elite racer as the Olympian and multi-time United States champion got the better of the final strides against Abe Alvarado in a photo-finish with a margin of just 0.09 seconds, Alvarado finishing in 3:51.95. In great consolation for Alvarado, he bested his own Mexican National Record which he had set earlier this year in 3:52.30. Davis Bove rounded out the podium in the men’s race with a 3:52.59 finish.
With the result, Bove became the 100th man in event history under four minutes.
“Any time you break the tape, it’s a good day,” said Kessler. “It was quite an event. It had kind of a buzz to it, just pulling up there were people here… It had some aura to it and I’m really happy to be a part of it.”
In the spirit of the event’s founding, several athletes entered the 2026 race seeking their first career sub-4:00 or 4:30 miles. Among these dreamers, three athletes reached their goal in this year’s race. DeLay’s result was remarkably her first ever sub-4:30 mile while Juliette Whittaker’s 4:28.99 result was her first time under the barrier. On the men’s side, Colin Kelly raced to a time of 3:59.29 for his first sub-four mile.
The event kicked off with the Run Club Mile and Run Club 4x400m Relay. Alex Gray and Sarah Leach took the men’s and women’s victories in the Run Club Mile while Pink Panther Track Club raced to an impressive win in the relay with a finishing time of 3:53.94.
